LOCATION:
The 66th city in the Philippines, Sagay straddles a good portion of the Northernmost
tip of the island of Negros. Located at the latitude of 10 degrees 53 minutes
and 50.52 seconds and longitude of 123 degrees, 24 minutes and 52.75 seconds.
It is bounded in the North by Asuncion Pass and Visayan sea; West by Cities
of Cadiz and Silay; East by the City of Escalante and Municipality of Toboso;
South by the City of Talisay and Municipality of Calatrava. It is approximately
84 kms. from Bacolod City which is the Provincial Capital.
ACCESSABILITY
Sagay City can be reached through Bacolod City which is the entry point to
Negros Occidental. By air, Bacolod is 45 minutes from Manila and 25 minutes
from Cebu. Philippine Airlines has three daily flights from Manila and a daily
flight from Cebu. Air Philippines and Cebu Pacific Airways also have two daily
flights.
HISTORY
- Name was derived from “sigay”, a semi-spherical shell that abounds
in the city’s many Islets and shores.
- Was founded in 1860 by Teniente Francisco Rodriguez and Basillo Cordova
in the mouth of the river called Arguelles, what is known today as Pueblo
de Magallanes in honor of Ferdinand Magellan.
- In 1906, the seat government was transferred to the present site, Dalusan.
- RA 8192 authored by Congressman Alfredo Marañon Jr. in the lower
house and Senator Raul Roco in the Senate is the fulfillment of every Sagaynon’s
dream of becoming a city. On June 11, 1996, President Fidel V. Ramos signed
it to law was ratified by it’s people, on August 10, 1996.
- It is composed of 24 brgys. With a total land area of 330.34 sq. km., marine
reserve constitutes 32,000 hec. Seascape, it has an estimated population of
139,000, Population Density of 393 persons per sq. km. 6 coastal brgys., 64
voting population, 5 rivers namely, Himoga-an, Bulanon, Pacul, Hamticon &
Tan-ao, the biggest is Himoga-an Baybay with the width of 90cm. and 193 hec.
of forest area. We have several falls namely, Lamayo, Pinagiwatan, Talithi,
etc.
