The Sound of Sinigayan Kahoneros
...It’s the beat of Life. Sagay’s coastal line and coral islets blend with natural beauty is the home to a wide variety of marine life. These rich marine resources have supported our fishing communities and even city folks for several generations. Fishing in the coastal areas is not only their livelihood. It has become their way of life. After the day’s catch,our fishing villagers entertained themselves by tapping the “kaha” or wooden boxes they used for keeping their catch. Today, we have created a distinctly Sinigayan sound. Exactly taken from the rhythm and beat of our fisherfolks’ cadence of catching fish. The beat conveys their triumphs, their joys, their frustration, their longing and their poignant sentiments. It also mirrors the abundance of our protected seascape as these “kahon” are filled with the diverse marine species. Sinigayan Kahoneros - - - tapping the Sinigayan beat and sound, Enchanting our senses to dance and surrender to the groove. It has no doubt becoming a unique Sagaynon culture and the beat of life.

The Birth of Sinigayan Kahoneros__The Sinigayan Kahoneros is a project of the City Government of Sagay intended for the Out-of-school Youth and unemployed who are musically inclined. The idea was conceptualized by the Committee members of the Sinigayan Festival, spearheaded by the Over –all Chairman Vice Mayor LEO RAFAEL M. CUEVA and the Chairperson of Sinigay sa Sagay Street Dancing, LEO LARRY J. CAYAYAN, JR. The idea of the concept was to create a distinct Sinigayan sound that is unique from all other festivals. The City Mayor Fortunato S. Javelosa then approved it. After a thorough audition and selection process, the chosen Kahon Tappers undergo several months of training. On March 10, 2006 was the launching of Sinigayan Kahoneros to the City Officials and selected guests. It was then that on March 16, 2005, the Sinigayan Kahoneros was introduced to the public during the Sinigayan Festival Grand Parade. The acceptance of the public was so overwhelming here in Sagay City that the popularity of the group spread to the whole province of Negros Occidental together with the Sinigayan Festival dancers, both handed Sagay City the crown in the Best in Festival Presentation Contest during the Pana-ad sa Negros Festival last April 2005 and First Place in the same competition last April 2006.The Sinigayan Kahoneros is a twelve-member band originally created to cater to festival beats and dances. As the group matured, they started to cater to different types of music, acoustic, old favorites, RNB and alike. They cater to different types of gigs to fit any occasions and it is where every listener have their own perfect song and sometimes bring them to tears as the group’s music captures the formers’ life story.That’s SINIGAYAN KAHONEROS music for you.
