Rivers have inspired some of man’s most sublime thoughts and sentiments, many of which have found expression in songs and poetry that refuse to die with the passing of time. The Danube River and the River Rhine in Western Europe are good examples. Rivers too have been the birthplace of some of the oldest and greatest civilizations of the world, like the Tigres and the Euphrates in the Middle East and the Nile River in Africa. With their great dams, rivers in modern times have contributed immensely to the wealth and progress of some nations. Still some rivers are associated with some of the great religions of the world, like the River Jordan in the Middle East and the Ganges in India, the holy river of Hindus. But not all rivers enjoy a revered place in history and the consciousness of mankind. Some, nay many, suffer the ultimate indignity of being made gutters, ironically, of human progress. This is the sad fate that could befall the once majestic Himoga-an River in Sagay, if nothing is done to save it from further degradation.
The Himoga-an River flows through the heart of barangays Fabrica and Paraiso as it meanders from its source way high in the uplands of northern central Negros passing through Barangay Himoga-an Baybay down to its mouth on the coast of Barangay Old Sagay. Barangay Fabrica, by the way, once had a claim to world fame as the home of the largest hardwood lumber mill in the world.
Himoga-an River is a perfect example of a natural treasure waiting to be “discovered”, appreciated and enjoyed. The long wait may have finally come to an end.
Many months back the City Government of Sagay took notice of the potentials of Himoga-an River as a tourist attraction and undertook a project to give Sagaynons and visitors a chance to experience the pleasures of river cruising. This project was inspired by Baroness Eva Abesamis Koenigswater who have cruised the river many times, was captivated by the river’s enchanting beauty and recommended to the Mayor Alfredo G. Maranon, Jr. |
