Agriculture  Secretary Arthur Yap to Keynote Sagay’s
12th Sinigayan Festival Tomorrow

           

Sagay City - - - Department of Agriculture Secretary Arthur C. Yap will be in Sagay City tomorrow, March 14, to be the guest of honor and speaker at the opening program of the 12th Sinigayan Festival at the city public plaza.

            Secretary Yap will also lead the ribbon cutting of the festival villages, the Duag-Sagay Art, Tourism and Cultural Village, Taliambong Food Festival Village and the first ever Sinigayan AgroFair.  He will also be leading  the groundbreaking of the Sagay New Abattoir and the Corn Post-Harvest Processing and Trading Facility, visit the Sagay Muscovado Sugar Mill (organic) and will witness the signing of the memorandum of agreement for Corn Post-Harvest  Processing and Trading Facility between the City Government of Sagay  and the National Agribusiness  Corporation (NABCOR).

            The Sagay Muscovado Sugar Mill which will be managed by The Organic Producer in the Island of Negros (OPTION-MPC) is believed to be the smallest raw sugar mill and the largest organic sugar mill in the country.  It will be the first sugar mill owned and managed by sugarcane planters that will produce organic sugar.  Japan Agriculture (JA) of Okinawa, Japan, donated the 500 MTCD (metric ton per day) sugar mill to the planters.  The mill equipment was entirely shipped from Iejima Island, Okinawa, to Sagay City and installed in a factory building  constructed by the sugar planters in a 40,000-square meter compound.  The factory is now about to operate.

            Sagay City Mayor Alfredo G. Marañon, Jr. said  “the Sinigayan Festival is one of the most festive, most colorful and most exciting events in Negros.  He said  however that our celebration this year will be somewhat subdued and restrained as it falls at the height of the Lenten Season. 

Mayor Marañon is encouraging everyone to come and see the first  Sinigayan Agrofair being participated by 37 exhibitors.  The aim of the Agrofair is to update our farmers on the latest  agri-industrial technologies.  He also said seminars and lectures will be conducted throughout the week for the benefit of the farmers and growers.
